Winter Pixie Hat Pattern

I honesty had never seen a split brim hat before until a few years ago. Some of my friends threw a sort of white elephant gift exchange, but instead of the guests bringing presents to swap, they knitted, I don’t know, like twenty or so hats? And they put them in brown paper bags underneath the tree. Someone would pick a bag, and if they wanted to trade hats with someone they could, but only when it was their turn. It was a lot of fun! I ended up getting an orange split brim hat (I call it my Little Orange Riding Hood hahaha) and Michael got a green and purple striped wool beanie.

Ever since then (actually ever since I started crocheting) I wanted to learn how to make one of those split brim hats. Once I researched a bit I found that it was actually pretty easy! You just crochet a couple rows back and forth, and then join then and start crocheting in rounds.

I’ve been messing around a little with structuring crochet to shape the way I want it. By increasing and decreasing stitches in rows or rounds you can get the piece you’re working on to move and shape different ways. Combine that with my recent texture discovery (and obsession) and the Winter Pixie hat was born! Look at that little curl at the tip!

Fasten off, leaving a tail to sew the top of the hat closed. Weave in all ends and turn the hat right side out.

Add a pom-pom to each corner on the bottom of the hat.

I’ve also done a two color version of this hat! I think that it looks better to replace rows 9, 18, and 27 with the alternating front and back post stitching rather than the plain hdc though when you just do two colors.
