My good friend Whitney gave me an earwarmer and wanted to see if I could figure out a crochet pattern for it. The original one looks knitted, but after messing around with chains and shape I came up with a crochet version! Whitney’s mother wears it all the time during her various outdoor activities, and has worn it for years. The Kerry Earwarmer Wrap is named after her. 🙂 <3
Stitch marker (optional)
Ch – chain
St – stitch
Rnd – round
Sc- single crochet
Sl st – slip stitch
Estimate the size of the earwarmer after round 7 by placing it on your head. While this pattern doesn’t have a gauge, you can make it bigger or smaller by changing hook size. Do not, however, change the yarn weight, that’s what makes this earwarmer so cozy 🙂
You can also add more than one button to make it adjustable.
Rnd 1 – Ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 8 ch. 3 sc in last ch. On the other side of the chain (see photo below), sc in next 9 sts. 3 sc in the last ch st. sl st to join to first sc.
Rnd 2 – Ch 1, sc in next 10 sts. *Ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in the next ch. Sl st in same st as the sc before the ch 3*. sc in next 12 sts. Repeat from * to *. Sc in next st. DO NOT JOIN, work in a spiral from here on out.
Rnd 3 – Sc in next 12 sts, and sc in next 3 ch. *Ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 2 chains. Sl st into same st as the sc before the ch 4 (see photo below)*, sc in next 15 st and next 3 chains. Repeat from * to *. Sc in next 4 sts.
Rnd 4 – Sc in next 15 scs and 3 chs. 2 sc in next ch, sc in next 22 scs and 3 chs. 2 sc in next ch, sc in next 8 scs.
Rnd 5 – Sc in next 20 scs. *Ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 3 chs. Sl st in same st as the sc before the ch 5.* sc in next 27 scs. Repeat * to *. Sc in next 8 scs.
Rnd 6 – Sc in next 20 scs and 4 chs. 2 sc in next ch. Sc in next 32 sts and next 4 chs. 2 sc in next ch. Sc in next 13 scs.
Rnd 7 – Sc in next 26 scs. *Ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 3 chs. Sl st in same st as the ch 5.* sc in next 38 scs. Repeat * to *. Sc in next 13 scs.
Rnd 8 – Sc in the next 26 scs and 4 chs. Sc in next ch, ch 4, sl st into same st (this makes the buttonhole). Sc in next 43 scs and 4 chs. 2 sc in next ch. Sc in next 17 scs. Sl st to next sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Add a button on the right side of the earwarmer (the side facing you when you crocheted it), opposite of the flap with the buttonhole.
You can add an embellishment like a flower if you choose 🙂
The Kerry Earwarmer Wrap is convertible, too. You can either wear it with the strap under your chin or at the base of your head, as shown below.
