Basic Half Double Crochet Beanie Pattern

The very first stitch I learned when I started to crochet was the half double crochet stitch. I love it because it doesn’t take as long as a single crochet stitch when making something, and it’s a tighter weave than the double crochet stitch. This beanie is a great beginner project and it is very quick to work up once you get the hang of it!

Materials

worsted weight (4) yarn

K (6.5mm) hook

Embroidery scissors

Finishing needle

Terms (US)

Ch – chain

St – stitch

Rnd – round

Sc- single crochet

Sl st – slip stitch

Notes

ch 1 at the beginning of each round does not count as a st.

Join at the end of each round with a sl st to the top of the first hdc at the beginning of the round.

Instructions

Rnd 1 – In a magic circle (or ch 4, sl st to first st to form a ring), ch 1, 8 hdc. (8 hdc)

Rnd 2 – ch 1, 2 hdc in same st. 2 hdc in each st around. (16 hdc)

Rnd 3 – ch 1, hdc in same st. 2 hdc in next st. *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. (24 hdc)

Rnd 4 – ch 1, hdc in same st and next st. 2 hdc in next st. *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. (32 hdc)

Rnd 5 – ch 1, hdc in same st and next 2 sts. 2 hdc in next st. *hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. (40 hdc)

Rnd 6 – ch 1, hdc in same st and next 3 sts. 2 hdc in next st. *hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. (48 hdc)

Rnd 7 – ch 1, hdc in same st and next 4 sts. 2 hdc in next st. *hdc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. (56 hdc)

Rnd 8 – ch 1, hdc in same st and next 5 sts. 2 hdc in next st. *hdc in next 6 sts, 2 hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. (64 hdc)

Rnd 9 – ch 1, hdc in same st and each st around. (64 hdc)

Rnds 10-22 – repeat rnd 9. Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.

And there you have it! Super easy, right?
